Surah Yaseen | Surah Yasin | سورة يس | Surah Mulk | Surah Al Mulk
Name Surah Yasin
The Surah derives its name from the two Arabic letters that appear at the beginning of the Surah.
Period of Revelation
The style of the Surah indicates that it was revealed during the latter part of the middle Makkan period or possibly towards the end of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) time in Makkah.
Subject Matter and Theme
The primary focus of this Surah is to warn the Quraish about the consequences of rejecting the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and opposing it through oppression, mockery, and ridicule. The warning is prominent throughout, though arguments are also presented to help people understand the truth.
Three main arguments are provided:
- The belief in Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) is supported by the signs in the universe and by logic.
- The concept of the Hereafter is backed by the signs in the universe, human existence, and common sense.
- The Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) is validated by the fact that he endured numerous hardships in delivering the message without any selfish motives, and the message itself was rational and reasonable, benefiting the people.
Through these arguments, the Surah repeatedly emphasizes the themes of rebuke, reproach, and warning in a powerful way, aimed at shaking the hearts of those with any capacity for truth, urging them not to remain indifferent.
According to a narration by Imam Ahmad, Abu Daud, Nasai, Ibn Majah, and Tabarani from Hadrat Ma’qil bin Yasar, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Surah Ya-Sin as “the heart of the Qur’an.” This is similar to the description of Surah Al-Fatiha as the “Umm al-Qur’an,” or the essence of the Qur’an. Surah Ya-Sin is called the “throbbing heart” of the Qur’an because it delivers the Qur’an’s message in a powerful way that stirs the spirit and breaks the inertia in people.
Furthermore, Imam Ahmad, Abu Da’ud, and Ibn Majah have narrated from Ma’qil bin Yasar that the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed: “Recite Surah Ya-Sin to the dying among you.” This is meant not only to revive and refresh the Islamic faith in the mind of the dying person but also to present a clear image of the Hereafter, so they understand what lies ahead after leaving this world. It is recommended to recite the Surah along with its translation, particularly for those who do not understand Arabic, so that the intended message and admonition can be fully received.
